When Tiffani Von Glahn and Carl Alewine found out that they were going to become mom and dad to a baby girl, they were beside themselves with excitement. Like all new parents, the couple was looking forward to the joyful day when their daughter would finally arrive.

Unfortunately, that happy day turned into a nightmarish fiasco that neither of them could foresee. Poor Tiffani was scared for her baby’s life, and if she had known beforehand how that day would end, she probably would have acted differently. But as we all know, hindsight is 20/20, and it was now too late to change what happened.

Tiffani had a high-risk pregnancy, so when she suddenly went into labor – her husband knew he had to rush her to the hospital. But that was only the beginning of their evening that would lead to Carl being placed in handcuffs. Soon their story was plastered all over the news.

Early on in Tiffani’s pregnancy, she was told that she couldn’t have a vaginal delivery because the baby’s position was all wrong. The young couple had planned to have Anastasia at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, which was an hour away from their home. Tiffani told WCBD:

I was told she was a high-risk pregnancy and the way she was sitting at the time, she would’ve gotten stuck and I would’ve had to have a C-section. So I was thinking there was no way I could have her naturally.

Tiffani didn’t want to do anything to jeopardize her baby’s health, and was intent on following doctor’s orders until she was born. However, Anastasia was anxious to come out and play, and three weeks before she was due to be delivered by C-section, mom Tiffani went into labor.

Carl rushed mom to the hospital, and the only thing on Tiffani’s mind was getting to the hospital in time. She thought if the baby popped out too early, it would spell certain doom, and time was certainly not on their side!

Of course, when their car sped down the freeway at over 95 miles per hour, it caught the attention of a police cruiser. When the policeman pulled up behind their car and flashed his lights, Carl asked Tiffani if he should pull over and stop, but she told him to keep driving. Mom was frightened for her little girl, and saving the life of her baby was more important than breaking the law.

When Carl ignored all their efforts to get him to stop, the cops switched gears and acted accordingly. That’s when the couple realized their mistake – what started out as a single cop car turned into a wild 20-car police chase. At this point, the story was on every news agency’s radar. A very embarrassed Tiffani said:

I look back and there’s like 20 police cars, and they had the exits blocked off and everything. Eventually it got to where they had to box us in to stop us.

The couple had no choice but to stop right in the middle of the Interstate-26. Carl was immediately handcuffed for safety reasons. One of the policemen told them it’s fairly common for speed demons to fake having a pregnant wife.

However, it didn’t take long for officers to realize that this very pregnant woman was really having a baby – right at that very moment! One of the men quickly stepped up to the plate and switched roles from being a cop to playing a pretend doc. Carl told WCBD:

I’m sitting there, watching her born on the hood of the car, fireworks going off in the background because it’s New Year’s, and then they let me out of handcuffs, and the cops started clapping and congratulating us.

Even though there were concerns about complications with Tiffani’s pregnancy, it turns out that she was worried about nothing. She gave birth naturally in the middle of the most high-stress situation imaginable, and Anastasia turned out just fine. Only, this special New Years baby has an exciting story to tell her grandkids one day.
